Trekking in Cabo de Gata

Vulcanic landscape meets wild coast

This trip contours the unique coastline of Cabo de Gata Natural Park, the largest protected coastal area in Andalucia. UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Rich in flora, dessert with  dunes,  unique sand-rock and volcano formations. Unrivaled in southern Europe. We will be entering this natural park visiting both, land and sea protected areas. Since the very beginning we will realize why: Cabo de Gata is a wild place but gentle at the same time.

A wild and rugged terrain, volcanic in nature, with mountain formations and an astonishing coastline, the protected landscapes are host to an unforeseen array of flora and fauna. The cultural ancestry of the area is apparent in its historical buildings, towers, castles, water wells and windmills, and the region is scattered with whitewashed villages both inland and coastal. A place to feel the energy of the Nature, but also a place  to  find peacefulness and serenity on the mildest winters in Europe, since this is the only  region in Europe with true desert climate.

General Info

The trip is designed as a point to point, with well balanced itineraries that end at our  selected accommodations. We will enjoy 7 sunrises and 7 sunsets by the seafront. We never loose eyecontact with the sea. A sea plunge can take place at any walking day at any time of the year!

Trip Profile

This trip is designed as a point to point trek. 5 well balanced and timed walking journeys, starting and finishing at our selected hotels, plus a free day. Maximum height 488 m. Average ascent per day 350 m. Average distance covered per day 14 kms. Average daily ascent 570 mts.

We’ve chosen our hotels to match the start and end of our walks, to avoid vehicle transfers. There are all hotels  located at the very seafront, so we can enjoy sunrises and sunsets. The are all small family run bussineses, with very few rooms, always on shared basis.

We know how important breakfasts are for  everyone on a walking trip. We have organized with our hotels very varied types of food, from local seasonal fruit (including local mango and avocados!) to the traditional cereals and dairy products but also substantial spanish omelets and serrano ham and meats. Packed lunch with triple decker multi-cereal sandwich plus varied fruit, almonds nougat and dates. In the evening, the best reward is always an elaborated hot meal: Always regional dishes, with seasonal fish and vegetables, from casseroles, to stews and savory rice plates. We also have a substantial choice of local plates adapted to vegetarian, gluten free or allergic (please notify when booking).
