This trip contours the unique coastline of Cabo de Gata Natural Park, the largest protected coastal area in Andalucia. UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Rich in flora, dessert with dunes, unique sand-rock and volcano formations. Unrivaled in southern Europe. We will be entering this natural park visiting both, land and sea protected areas. Since the very beginning we will realize why: Cabo de Gata is a wild place but gentle at the same time.
A wild and rugged terrain, volcanic in nature, with mountain formations and an astonishing coastline, the protected landscapes are host to an unforeseen array of flora and fauna. The cultural ancestry of the area is apparent in its historical buildings, towers, castles, water wells and windmills, and the region is scattered with whitewashed villages both inland and coastal. A place to feel the energy of the Nature, but also a place to find peacefulness and serenity on the mildest winters in Europe, since this is the only region in Europe with true desert climate.
5 days of walking, plus free day. This trip is classified as moderate (Activity Level 4), you should be confident in your physical condition and ability to deal with some difficult underfoot terrain and coastal seacliff sections. The walking routes are all fairly long (around 12-18 km a day) and vary in duration from 4 to 7 hours per day (including stops). The trek is more on the moderate side ‐ in five days of walking we cover the distance between Agua Amarga and Cabo de Gata. The paths we follow are rocky sections with sustained steep and rocky ascents/descents on the seafront. This trip is not suitable for people with vertigo (some sections near sealiffs).
